CLASSIC

There are no words to describe how I feel about this dress. Let's just say I am obsessed. I first saw it on Blair from Atlantic Pacific, then on Jean from Extra Petite. While the weather is still warm enough, I took a cue from Atlantic Pacific to button up the trench and wear it as a dress.  As the weather cools down, I am looking forward to wearing it open as a vest a la Extra Petite.

It is no secret that I love everything about the summer.  The trips to the beach, the soaring temperatures, the longer days, & the sundresses, however, there is one thing that I can't do in the summer: layer.  

One of my favorite parts about fall is the endless outfit combinations that can be created by layering pieces.  Here's to lots of mixing & matching & layering this fall.

WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY

White is such a crisp, clean, fresh feeling color. I think whoever said you can't wear white after Labor Day is crazy.  Why would I want to limit wearing it to only the summer months?   However, I do believe there are some tips to wearing white during the cooler months...

1. FABRIC.  The fabric of your piece is so important.  You don't want to look like you're off to a summer BBQ in the middle of 50 degree weather.  Stick to classic fall/winter fabrics - denim, wool, knits, etc.  Stay away from anything too sheer or lightweight.  For example, I've put away linen for the winter.

2. ACCESSORIES.  9 times out of 10, any accessories that you would wear with your summer whites should not be worn with your fall white outfit.  Anchor the outfit with fall  accessories (darker colors, fur, boots, etc).  It makes all the difference & you can never go wrong with classic black.

September is such an unpredictable weather month in New York.  The mornings & evenings are chilly, but midday heats up.  The highs & lows of the temperatures makes getting dressed in the morning a bit tricky.  I have been loving mixing in some fall pieces, such as this plaid top & felt hat, with my summer basics.

Sometimes rather than playing with shape or color, I enjoy adding interest to an outfit through texture.  Since the colors on both my top & skirt are muted & the shapes are classic, I decided to pair a sequined skirt with a feathered top & create an outfit based around unusual textures.  

Style Tip: this is an especially great way to amp up a monochrome look.  I love to use leather, fur, sequins, etc in an all black look!

TIERED PONYTAIL

 

If you follow along regularly, you may have noticed that I wear ponytails a lot.  I probably leave the house with one at least twice a week & leave the office with one closer to 4 days a week.  

Don't get me wrong, I love how my hair looks down, but during the summer, it gets too hot to wear down all the time & even as the weather has been cooler, I find my hair getting in my way at times.

I love this updated version of a simple ponytail.  To achieve this look, pull your hair into a ponytail height of your choice.  I went with a parted low ponytail.  Tease the entire tail - this will give you the volume you need to create each tier.  Simply, wrap a hair band around the tail every few inches until you reach the bottom.

MOD MOMENT

60's mod is back for fall & I couldn't be happier.  I have been wearing shift dresses for years. Since my body type is very boyish (straight up and down with no defined waist), I love to show off my arms and legs but tend to camouflage my middle, so shift dress styles are right up my alley.

For those of you looking to play down your middle, a shift dress is a great option. A patterned version camouflages even more & a pointed toe flat is comfortable yet extends the length of your leg.  It is the perfect look for work, weekend, or date night!
