I remember circa 2003 when I got my first Juicy sweatsuit & my first pair of Birkenstock's for Christmas. I wore both on my first day back to school and thought I was the coolest thing ever. While leisurewear & Birkenstock's are both in style again, let me paint a picture of my look for you....a white terrycloth sweatshirt & pants with JUICY stamped across the back & bottom accessorized with my Birkenstock's...and socks! I cringe just thinking about that outfit, but the worst part for me was definitely the white athletic socks with my sandals.
Nowadays, adding socks to a pair of pumps or sandals can actually be pretty fun & quirky but it has to be done the right way. I've noticed socks and heels continue to be a huge trend in street style & on the runways and challenged myself to try it out. I opted for a very thin black sock with my bright red pumps.
Cute socks have become a staple peeking out of booties or styled with menswear inspired oxfords. I love the juxtaposition of styles when adding socks to a look. My girly red pumps & simple socks played nicely off of my sportier varsity sweater & a leather pencil skirt in this look.
What do you think of how this look turned out? Did I fall back into my 8th grade styling techniques?
XO,
Michelle Paige

Absolutely love it! So fashion forward, just curious while out and about did receive any feedback on this look? I personally love this look on the runway. I've been thinking a bright colored pair of socks might pair well with a minimalist sandal. What do you think?

I love it on the runway too and have actually seen it on the streets of NYC a couple of times so I wanted to give it a try! I agree- gotta try a sock and sandal for summer time! Sounds fun & quirky
DeleteI love the oversized sweater paired with this pencil skirt! And you are rocking the socks+heels.

Ok, you totally rocked this socks+pumps look - a look I am afraid to try. And for that matter I never liked or wore socks (any kind but especially white socks) paired with Birkenstocks. I think you found the perfect pair of thin black socks though, to wear with heels. You were bold by choosing red heels to pair with the black socks. Your lips match the pretty pumps. BTW I love that sweater.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Once again, I have to highlight all the text in your post in order to be able to read it all. Something is off - just letting you know.
Enjoy the weekend! <3 Ada.
Thank you so much! I agree that it can be a tricky look but it was a fun risk to take!
DeleteHi, nice one.
ReplyDeleteHas it become a staple of your wardrobe. As a guy, I find them flattering as if they just work together, you don't think at the socks as something more which interrupts a visual follow.
On the balance hem - waistline / heel height, according to some guidelines I read, low waistlines, longer tops in this case, mix nicely with high heels, but maybe the skirt hem is slightly too low and flatter heels might work better, nevertheless looks great :).
This isn't really a staple that I typically wear but it's a nice way to wear heels without cold feet during the winter. These heels are actually higher than they appear and I didn't want to look like a street walker, so pairing them with a longer skirt was the way to go.
DeleteYes, I also don't necessarily agree on guidelines, creativity always comes first and I'm aware there are multiple school of thought, some are about playing "safe", etc. I didn't actually suggest a shorter skirt haha :), more like lower heels, which in many cases turn out to look good with low hems, maxis, midis, etc. Not to mean that yours wasn't the way to go.
DeleteI didn't think at socks as warming feet, though they might indeed help a bit, lol, depend on how thick they are, so yeah you might not want them much in summer (similarly likewise for me) more like protecting them from blisters and hence maybe making high heels comfier.
Higher than they appear? Seemed quite high to me, but I think I get what you mean, with a short skirt they might look higher, especially with no socks as well and look inappropriate.
I agree that heels this high would be more difficult to pull off classily with a short skirt, but not impossible and I'm not even that much into high heels, but depends on the attitude, personality, overall outfit and discretion, imho others can look tastless even in flats if they are, or the rest of the oufit is badly put together.
Same for men of course :)
Sorry for the length, but thanks for the exchange of style views :D.
Ah I see. You have more of a 'Parisian' mind set with the lower heel idea! I like it. I never thought of wearing socks to avoid blisters - definitely a good thought! I might have to test it out with some lightweight or sheer socks.
