Just the way I love getting swept up in a romantic comedy movie, I love reading a good rom-com book! Below I'm sharing 3 of my recent favorites...
Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld: This book is a modern retelling of Pride & Prejudice and I could not put it down. I found the book to be easy to read & it included everything you want out of a romantic comedy -- sweetness, cleverness, humor and a love story. Read the description from Amazon:
Liz is a magazine writer in her late thirties who, like her older sister, Jane, lives in New York City. When their father has a health scare, they return to their childhood home in Cincinnati to help—and discover that the sprawling Tudor they grew up in is crumbling and the family is in disarray.
Youngest sisters Kitty and Lydia are too busy with their CrossFit workouts and Paleo diets to get jobs. Mary, the middle sister, is earning her third master’s degree and barely leaves her room, except for those mysterious Tuesday-night outings she won’t discuss. And Mrs. Bennet has one thing on her mind: how to marry off her daughters.
Enter Chip Bingley, a handsome new-in-town doctor who recently appeared on the reality dating show Eligible. At a July 4th barbecue, Chip takes an immediate interest in Jane, but Chip’s friend Fitzwilliam Darcy reveals himself to Liz as much less charming. . .and yet, first impressions can be deceiving.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: This book is about an Elizabeth Taylor-esque actress who tells her life story to an inexperienced magazine reporter. It was another story that I couldn't put down and found it to be so interesting to read. Plus there were some great unexpected moments. Check out the Amazon description:
Aging Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jump-start her career.
Summoned to Evelyn's apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to LA in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late '80s and, of course, her seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds - revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love - Monique begins to feel a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.
Well Met by Jen DeLuca: I was a little skeptical about this book. It was an option from Book of the Month & was described as being set at a Renaissance Faire, which is not something I have interest in but it was a love story and a few of my co-workers were also ordering it so I decided to go for it. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the story. It made me laugh out load and tugged at my heart strings. Amazon description below:
Emily knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small town of Willow Creek for the summer to help her sister recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged niece?
The faire is Simon's family legacy and from the start he makes clear he doesn't have time for Emily's lighthearted approach to life, her Shakespeare conspiracy theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up. Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting with Emily when she's in her wench's costume. But is this attraction real, or just part of the characters they're portraying?
What should I read next?
